The Torrent is a relatively lightweight fin constructed of a flexible polypropylene blade and a thermoplastic rubber foot pocket. The face of the blade is fitted with a pair of narrow ribs for stability, and the rubber side rails have notches about two-thirds of the way up the blade to increase blade flex. The blade is positioned on top of the foot pocket, which features an extended footboard and a really effective nonskid pattern to combat slippery boat decks.
The Torrent is not the fastest kicker in the fin box, and its across-the-board ergo performance is middle of the road. The blade’s a bit stiff but causes only minimal ankle strain. It’s easy to kick but generates only average power. It’s a little clunky in turns but overall pretty maneuverable. Test divers didn’t find anything they really disliked, but they didn’t find anything that sent their finning hearts aflutter either. The only thing that really stood out was the aggressive nonskid pattern that proved to be very effective on a wet deck. As one test diver remarked, “Functional, but uninspiring.”
The Torrent gets the job done, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. For the price, you could do worse.
